Seeing as this project is getting alot of raving, I figured I'd better
ramble as well.
It might be because I'm not a Java developer but a Delphi developer, but I
don't think that Java would be the best idea.. Using a language like Delphi
would give you a faster application and working more stable in the operating
system. Also for Delphi it's fairly simple to "talk" to the browser. You can
simply include the complete IE "canvas" into the IDE, making it DynAPI
compatible :). Seeing that DynAPI is still the one that should take care of
cross-browser, the IE component is all that you need (which will work fast
because it's part of the operating system).
There are syntax-highlighting components available for Delphi, making a
simple text editor working within only a few hours (I've created a
Javascript editor a while back in Delphi, so I know this from experience..
anyone remembers JEDI? .. actually, I might still have this code lying
around somewhere).
I think the only thing going for Java is the open platform, but seeing that
there's currently a big project going on to get Delphi working on Linux you
could get the IDE working on both Win32 and Linux.. which is still the
biggest user-base.
This might actually get me developing in Delphi again (while not at work)..
so if anyone (Eytan?) starts this thing in Delphi let me know, and I will
most likely join.
