Hope I can help you here a little bit.
1) For cross-browser information, look at this site:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~ppk/js/index.html
You need "Version5 browsers" section.
This is the best resource AFAIK.
2) If you need Menu - I recommend you to try this library:
http://www.webreference.com/dhtml/column46/
It is so-called HierMenu library, renamed to HM_MENU.
I have tested 4.0.3 version dated Jan.25th.
It works fine with MS IE, NS6 and NN4.75.
What else you can wish?
BTW: this library is rather well written.
I never get *loading errors* with it.
If you tell me what are your target browsers, may be I can offer other
solution for you. And, forgot to ask: what kind of dynamic effects you want
to have?
