As to uses, I can think of one, it could be used to style the first
letter of a paragraph with a stylish GIF of some sort, like the monk in
the monasteries used to do by hand. A picture Alphabet!

That shouldn't be a problem for a few titles, but if you use it to type your
text, you have hundreds/thousands of large clipped gifs on your page. even
though it uses the same image from cache, I expect that will use way too
much ram.
I do see a definite use, where you want to use your customers company font
for titles, and headings, especially if this text is extracted from a
database, or otherwise dynamic.
One thing, Gabriel doesn't lack imagination, or originality!
