I can now answer this question at least. The reason has to do with the
tangledness of this particular widget's painting process, and the way
creation works. The subnodes would be added as children and asked to
paint themselves before they had been actually precreated. A substantial
rewrite of the code has made this no longer an issue.

If there's a lesson in this, it's always be aware of the creation state
of your widget, and act accordingly; normally not a problem, but for a
collection of widgets like a tree it's very important.
