In answer to my own question, I've commented out lines 115 & 116 in loadpanel.js and the problem seems to have gone away. However, this is presumably a global thing .. I'm looking at the code but I'm not familiar enough with JavaScript to see if I can turn the autoresize off on a layer by layer basis.
