(Because this is semi-official, I'm using my e-gold address instead of the
usual [EMAIL PROTECTED] address, but I don't speak for e-gold Ltd.,
just for Jim Ray as new moderator of the e-gold list.)

Folks, as new moderator, let me say that repeated-information has got to
and is going to stop. I'm not picking on Pecunix (believe it or not, this was
just the first redundant message to appear since Reid passed the title). If
it has appeared here once, it needs not be repeated, either directly or in
quoted text.
Yes, I know that (for an example not involving the Pecunix message)
Microsoft Outlook defaults to have emails behave as:
----- Original Message -----
From: someone
To: e-gold Discussion
...etc....
Stuff we've already seen before, wasting bandwidth and space...
>----- Original Message -----
>... Stuff we've already seen TWICE
>>----- Original Message -----
>>...Stuff we've seen now THREE TIMES!!!
>>> Lather, rinse, repeat!.....
and that it takes actual effort (horrors!) to elide this garbage-enhancing
feature and quote things only if you're actually responding to them.
And yes, I know that in private e-mail circumstances, that "feature" might
even be useful, but composing e-mail for public lists takes (and SHOULD
TAKE) more time and care. Getting rid of redundant stuff is only common
courtesy to those on the digest version of the list (which, ideally, should
read like a good book, instead of being a stress-test of many "page down"
keys). If Outlook users don't have time for common courtesy to those on
the digest version of the list, they MIGHT get one warning, but I'm not as
nice of a person as Reid is, and the sanction I MAY employ is to silently
unsubscribe them from the regular list & place 'em on the digest version
so that they can experience "page down repetitive stress syndrome" for
themselves.
This is not a bluff, I'm serious about the quality of this list. Yes, some of
you do get away with quite a bit (JP, I'm looking in your direction...) but
PLEASE don't push me. The reason someone like JP gets away with a
few things is because he's JP! and he generally does neat stuff. I'll stop
picking on JP now, but I ask each of you to look carefully at your own
signal to noise ratio, and see what you can do to improve it to benefit
other list members, especially those who choose the digest and can't
just killfile you.
Think about it this way... Many people here are used to 100s of emails
a day. I've met others who feel "under attack" if they get 100 messages
in a WEEK (especially if 50 of the messages happen to be pure noise).
Redundant postings will drive these (often VERY interesting, when they
do get around to posting) people away, and it's against the rules. If you
would prefer not to follow the rules you saw when you subscribed, I'd
suggest UNsubscribing ASAP, because you won't like me one bit.
Take a bit of time on messages (the repeated Pecunix message WAS
at least pretty-well-written). Proofread! Run spell check! Count to ten if
you're annoyed! Do whatever it takes to make this list interesting and
keep me (a very anti-censorship guy, for those of you who don't know
me) from having to exercise any new powers I'd rather not have to use.
Thanks.
JMR
PS Despite today's e-gold security-enhancements, Jay's wise words
bear repeating:
(If you suspect your computer *has* been infected by a
virus, your first concern should continue to be the removal
of that virus.)
If a hostile entity monitors all your keystrokes & can do other things to
your computer, the security of your e-gold account could be among the
least of your problems. The new technology may be nice, but security
is still a process & a mind-set -- and not just technology. Be safe!
