Dear Friends,

A business associate sent the following link:

http://www.japantimes.co.jp/cgi-bin/getarticle.pl5?nb20020108a4.htm

It appears from this article that Japan's banks
are having difficulty with defaults on loans,
and the banking industry may be nationalized for
whatever little good (and great harm) that would
do.

In his comments on the subject, my correspondent
wondered whether there is sufficient gold and silver
coinage in private hands to sustain private economic
activity after "the Great Reckoning" of which my
namesake wrote. I assured him that I knew of quite
a large number of enthusiasts of "hard money" who
could readily supply specie and bullion for any
and all who were able to provide a useful exchange
of value in return. <smile>

Regards,

Jim
