> Jay, where did you get a Segway? i just got to take it for a test drive - they didn't happen to have one in the colour i wanted ;)
now i'm going to tangentially tie this story to e-gold. the Segways were demonstrated at the FIRST (1) (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) national robotics competition held at Epcot. this organization was started 10 years ago by Dean Kamen (3), inventor of the Segway (2), to promote engineering to high school kids. they plan to have FIRST teams from every US high school in 5 more years. the FIRST competition tries to mirror the engineering environment of real world businesses. teams have a defined problem to solve in a fixed amount of time using fixed resources. teams form alliances with other teams to compete against each other. a lot of innovative ideas pop up each year - this year it seemed to be the tether concept: robots would release a long tape measure type device to extend their robot into a remote zone to score more points. during his speech yesterday at the FIRST event, dean mentioned exchanging Gold for goods and ideas for ideas. dean has also started his own currency for his 'nation' of North Dumpling (4). he carries one of its bills, with a value of Pi, in his wallet. anyone out there with some North Dumpling notes that wants to exchange them for e-gold speak up! jay w.
