Dear Eric, No, really, there is always new knowledge to be gained. It just isn't gained by seeing the same dozen variants on 419 scams posted on different lists, as well as in my various inboxes. What you seemed to identify as a novelty is just a variant on the old Spanish Prisoner fraud that crops up frequently, and has done ever since about 1610.
Nor do I mind the use of the inbox space for this e-mail account. Truly, if it is important, people should know better than to e-mail me here, as I've pointed out in other missives. PT Barnum was mistaken. The rate of births, even in his time, was much higher. Nor is it even clear if the historical figure PT Barnum said any such thing. Like a famous quote about the triumph of evil attributed to Edmund Burke but found nowhere in his writings, it is the case that many historical figures get a bad rap. The questions I was trying to raise were: what good does it do to post the text of such messages here? Are there really a huge number of new participants on these two lists (dgc.chat and talk.e-gold)? Does posting the text of such messages with an opening disclaimer afford the neophyte his best information? I would recommend that people who receive such messages delete them. I would also recommend that people who feel that such messages are undesirable generate a filter on a sample from the body text of one of the messages, and keep doing that until they reliably find their way to trash. Several web sites describing the 419 scam make recommendations to contact various government agencies in the USA feral gummint if an actual loss of value has been incurred. While individual results will vary, these are some of the things one can add to the point that such 419 messages are scams. Of course, I only go to the trouble of mentioning these things because I actually do want to see the digital gold economy become a better place to do business. Deep down inside, that desire is motivated by enlightened self interest, the fountainhead of all good deeds.
