This is clearly true, if Pd is as rare as I recall being told. I
am sure the beauty of gold also plays a big part. Palladium may be
rare, but it looks an awful lot like silver (or stainless steel!).

Well, not *only*, but here the relationship between price and
rarity seems especially strange to me.
