There is at present a storm of cons trying to fool people to
log in to fake e-gold sites.

It seems to me that one way around this is to use custom
encryption and a special client with idiosyncratic and not
easily faked appearance, rather than https encryption.

To use the system, the user would have to install wallet
software. Then, to con the user, the conman would have to
install a fake lookalike program on the user's computer.
There are already a storm of people trying to get you to
install such programs, which do things like phoning a pay
telephone line, or mine your disk for identity and account
information (View naked women who want to have sex with you --
but in order to interact with them, you have to install this
program!) so people are already on their guard, and have
security against such problems.
