The serious problems with PayPal are

1. All spends are revocable
2. Security efforts to try to avoid revocable transactions *within* the
PayPal system can flag you as a undesirable merchant.
3. Waaay too bloody expensive. (for an ecurrency provider)
4. Governments are closely watching PP, more and more deciding that they
are a bank.

The advantages of PayPal are:

1. Very widely used - 20 million customers vs 600,000 e-gold (and I'm being generous).
2. Retailers are used to accepting credit cards, so this is merely another credit card. And if there are chargeback issues, they will be reflected in the cost of doing business.
3. Easy entry to the system, not like e-gold. The major drawback that e-Gold has is how difficult it is to get funds into the system. Many debit cards are available to extract funds. But you still need to send cash to a MM to obtain funds.
4. The value of my holdings doesn't fluctuate as it does with e-Gold. If I have $100 in PayPal, it remains as $100. And I don't have to calculate grams to dollars. As a retailer I have a simple process: I have a product; you want a product; I sell you that product; you pay me for that product. I don't want to know about grams, price fluctuations, etc.

From a retailer's POV, PayPal is the clear cut choice. Until some of these issues are resolved, e-Gold will remain as nothing more than a limited method of transferring funds for hobbyists, investors, scammers (unfortunately) and folks trying to hide money.

And if y'all don't believe that regulatory agencies won't start investigating this method of money exchange, you better wake up. If e-Gold ever does reach millions of customers, you better believe government regulations will follow!
