Recent message traffic included a message about someone being seriously tired of all the discussion over GGN. From context, I suppose the intention was that GGN would be understood to mean "GetGoldNow."
However, I understood it, at first, to mean "Gaithman's Gold Nation." Which is one of the many reasons not to use abbreviations and acronyms.
In their delightful book _Positioning: the Battle for Your Mind_ now in its 20th year, Al Ries and Jack Trout demolish the idea of using three or four letters to identify a company. Here's the hardcover 20th anniversary edition: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0071359168/inspacetoday
and here's the cheap paperback: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0071373586/inspacetoday
Their main argument is that it is much harder to create a "position" in someone's mind for an entity with a bunch of letters for a name. What does G&SR mean? To 99.999% of the world, it means absolutely nothing.
What does "Gold & Silver Reserve" mean? Well, it has something to do with precious metals, clearly, and it might be a play on "Federal Reserve" so it might have to do with some kind of money. Not bad.
The name is great, and it means something, whether that name is "Gaithman's Gold Nation" or "GetGoldNow" or "Gold & Silver Reserve." But the acronym or the abbreviation is just a bunch of letters.
When you are out in the real world promoting your favorite digital type of gold, or convincing a merchant to accept e-gold or e-Bullion or GoldMoney or one of the minor currencies, try to avoid using acronyms and jargon. It does not help you get your point across.
Saying things like "I like to use DGCs that have cool SCIs or nifty ATIPs" is going to leave most people cold.
Whereas saying that you have principles, like you stand for individual liberty or private ownership of guns, and sticking by those hard-won views through thick and thin should be a much better approach. People actually appreciate knowing where one stands on issues, and there is no reason to apologize for having principles.
