I have found that Australian banks are cheap and efficient in
doing international transfers, flexible and cooperative about
identity issues, and make it easy for foreigners to open
accounts. Australians often have personal connections all over
asia. There is gold in Australia, thus if you are going to
move gold from one part of Asia to another, you might well end
up doing it through an Australian.
Another factor is that Australia is about as far as you can get
from Washington and Brussels, and still be in a reasonably
capitalist country
