For several years my father has been involved in mission work in Africa, principally Ivory Coast but also Swaziland. He knows quite a few people who have escaped the war-torn Ivory Coast across the river into Liberia, so it's sort of out of the frying pan and into the fire. It's a real mess.
One big problem my father mentioned is the difficulty sending money into the area. He knows several people in the States who want to send money to their associates or relatives in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia, but he said there is no infrastructure for this such as Western Union. Ironically, the principal missionaries, who are all natives of the area, have satellite internet access and laptop computers, thanks in part to the efforts of beneficent Westerners such as my father. So naturally I suggested e-gold.
But what's the chance of finding an e-gold exchange agent in Monrovia these days? Essentially nil I imagine. I suggested that if he knew good people in the area who had cash they could act as informal agents. But redemption is a problem. Occasionally someone flies into Africa and could carry some cash with them, but that's only about once a year and would be very risky in more ways than one.
So, does anybody know of any e-gold activity going on in Africa? Any exchange providers?
One of the things my father stresses in his work in Africa is to foster local business. Some of the villages he's dealt with now grow a surplus of crops which they sell on the open market, and he has also set up some kind of telephone and internet business where people can make money that way. Maybe the answer is to think outside the box and get these villages dealing in e-gold directly, but it would have to be augmented by cash to facilitate market exchanges.
Anyway, for what it's worth. I would appreciate any leads or suggestions however tenuous.
