The perpetrator attempted to exchange funds from a stolen ANZ bank account for e-gold with independent Gold Currency exchange provider http://AsianaGold.com
The arrest followed a joint investigation by the newly formed Australian High Tech Crime Centre (AHTCC) and South Australian police into the attempted theft and illegal transfer of funds from an ANZ bank customer to AsianaGold.com
The unauthorised access involved $4,890 Australian Dollars worth of stolen ANZ customer funds.
Asiana Gold identified the suspect after an attempt was made to exchange stolen funds for e-gold.
Federal agents and South Australian police jointly executed a search warrant on a home. A juvenile was questioned and subsequently charged.
A juvenile appeared in the Adelaide Youth Court on the 29th of May, 2003, charged with one count under Section 400.7 of the Criminal Code that deals with the proceeds of crime.
It is believed to be the first time an arrest has been made under legislation that specifically targets the proceeds of crime. It is also believed to be the first time a perpetrator has been arrested in Australia after attempting to steal Gold Currency.
This arrest is indicative of AsianaGold's stance towards fraud within the Gold Currency Industry.
