So, I'm thinking... say Big Brother wants to know what I do on my computer.
Heck, they may want this so much that they would even confiscate my
computer, storage disks, whatever. The thing is, I have my data encrypted
with PGP, and BB wants to know the password but I say I forget it. BB can't
do dick about it! I just say "I changed the password 2 days ago, and
yesterday it didn't work! I must have typed something wrong!"

Now, let's say me and BB are really pissed at each other. BB wants my data,
and I want my computer and data back, but they don't give it back to me, or
they do but they delete my encrypted data (doesn't matter if that's legal or
not, it's a possibility).

So, what do I do? How do I protect my self from this scenario? I can't make
a backup disk because they would confiscate that too. I can't put the disk
in a deposit box because that would require a key and that can also be
confiscated.

I figure the best thing is to make a backup on the Internet. But for that I
would need some storage space. Sure, I could pay for some web hosting, but
that's not private. Some privacy hosting is required (I see some of you guys
have offshore hosting), but without any information about the registrar,
without a domain name, email, bandwidth or anything else except FTP access;
of course, this is for a lower cost than normal hosting.

Actually, classic FTP is not good enough because it needs a special program
and also sends the password un-encrypted over the Net. So, some web-browser
based FTP, with SSL, is required. Basically, your Control Panel should be
able to function as a secure FTP.

All this "storage hosting" service would have to offer is some space on your
server's hard-drives for any files (especially encrypted files and PGP key
files), secure Control Panel access, and access from anywhere in the world
for anybody with the right username and password.

Does any of you guys have such services, or thinking of offering? I may be
interested in the future, and I'm thinking that if you advertise this stuff,
other people would come forward.

P.S. A free web hosting service is not secure enough (they could even stop
offering free hosting).

George Hara
