Most of us are already aware of this, but I'll pass it along anyway:

Title 18, Part 1, Chapter 25, Sec. 486

Sec. 486. - Uttering coins of gold, silver or other metal

Whoever, except as authorized by law, makes or utters or passes, or attempts to utter or pass, any coins of gold or silver or other metal, or alloys of metals, intended for use as current money, whether in the resemblance of coins of the United States or of foreign countries, or of original design, shall be fined under this title [1] or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

Doggone it, so if I come up with an original design, stamp it onto a piece of metal of any kind, and trade that piece of metal for a cup of coffee, some thugs can come to my house, take me away at gunpoint, and put me in a cage for up to five years.

Therefore, if I make any coins intended for use as current money, I better make sure they're made of plastic.

Arguably the law allows the passing of American gold eagles as current money. I am not sure what the law says about passing Canadian gold maples as current money.

Norfed says that the Treasury gave them a thumbs up legal opinion on the Liberty dollar. I suppose the Treasury just wanted to allow a little lawbreaking as an experiment to see how far it would go.

Oh say does that star spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the slaves, and the home of the weak?
