I believe it was a theory put forth by Timothy Leary or someone around in the mind expansion movement, possibly Buckmindster Fuller.
The statement you two make is very close to what they were saying, but instead of it moving to Asia or dying out, the idea was that growth would lift from the west coast line into outer space and in some ways this is the truth and what has happened since the 60's. All real future growth will occur off planet. This is all tied into a growth of information and technology that doubles in exponentially shorter and shorter time cycles.
