In bad economic times people gamble more.
As far as I know, indeed in bad economic times the entire "entertainment" sector does well.
(The usual examples quoted here are like, "Hollywood did great during the depression" and so on.)
People, possibly, want an escape.
It's interesting that the world these days, i think, has a much bigger, uh, entertainment sector in the economy. A lot of the economy is moving to the service/entertainment sector, or let us say the service/entertainment sector is growing, I think. There is more and more software delivery (cable TV, dvds etc), new product categories (like video games), and shifting product categories (due to 21st century manufacturing techniques and retail paradigms, "retailing" say the Gap, Old Navy etc, becomes more like entertainment, mor of a software purchase).
So the nest time there's a depression there'll be mroe entertainment section to go around! :)
