Hurricane Alex: Category 3; 120 mph; brushed North Carolina's Outer Banks on August 3 as a Category 2 storm; damaged about 280 structures and caused $750,000 in damage to public property in North Carolina; no reported deaths. Tropical Storm Bonnie: 65 mph; struck Florida's Panhandle on August 12; no reported deaths. Hurricane Charley: Category 4; 145 mph; struck Cuba and the Dry Tortugas before hitting Florida on Aug. 13; an estimated $7.4 billion in insured damage; 27 deaths. Hurricane Danielle: Category 2; 105 mph; never posed a threat to land. Tropical Storm Earl: 45 mph; caused minor damage in Grenada and St. Vincent on Auguset 16. Hurricane Frances: Category 4; 140 mph; struck Florida on Labor Day weekend as a Category 2 storm; 18 deaths in Georgia and Florida; insured damage estimated between $5 billion and $15 billion so far. Tropical Storm Gaston: 70 mph; struck just west of McClellanville, S.C., and its remnants swamped Richmond, Va., on Aug. 30; caused flooding and knocked out power to tens of thousands; at least eight deaths reported in Virginia. Tropical Storm Hermine: 50 mph; moved across eastern Massachusetts on Aug. 31. Hurricane Ivan: Still active Category 3; 120 mph; struck Barbados on Tuesday; at least 176 homes damaged.
