18,
2004 

Florida Damage from Hurricane Ivan 

Florida power outages are 399,094. 

In Escambia County, grocery stores, gas stations,
and hardware stores are all closed. The State is
reporting that electric power, water supplies,
telephone service and sewers are non-functional.
Five shelters were damaged. Clients in the Civic
Center were relocated to
other shelters. 

Gulf Power Company has been particularly hard
hit. The company reports that of 1,579 miles of
transmission lines, 790 miles have been destroyed
and of the 249 main feeders the company operates,
211 were out of service. 

The Pensacola Regional Airport in Escambia County
reports heavy damage but is open. The Panama City
Bay County International Airport tower is
operating on an emergency generator. The terminal
was closed on September 16, but was scheduled to
reopen September 17. 

Portions of Interstate 10 in the Panhandle are
closed. US 441 in Columbia County is completely
closed. US 98 to Cape San Blas (Gulf County) and
US 98 between Destin (Okaloosa County) and Ft.
Walton Beach (Okaloosa County) is completely
closed. In Escambia County, US 90 to the Alabama
State line is completely closed. Several other
state and county roads are closed due to being
flooded, washed out or covered with debris. 

Sections of the I-10 bridge over Escambia Bay to
Pensacola/Escambia County suffered significant
damage and the bridge is now closed. The bridge
to Perdido Key (Escambia County) is completely
closed. US 98 bridge from Pensacola to Gulf
Breeze and US 90 bridge in Escambia are closed
due to structural damage. The Shalimar Bridge
(Okaloosa County) is closed. The bridge to
Navarre Beach (Santa Rosa County) is closed.
The bridge to Pensacola Beach is closed. The I-10
Bridge over Escambia Bay is closed. Shoal River
Bridge, the bridge over Choctawhatchee Bay
(Walton/Okaloosa Counties) and the bridge between
Brooks and Destin (Okaloosa County) are also
closed. 

Three National Urban Search and Rescue (US&R)
teams are currently conducting missions in
Florida and one additional National US&R team is
en route to Florida.

Ten eight-person FEMA/State US&R task force
reconnaissance teams were airlifted by the US
Coast Guard to Perdido Key (Escambia County) at
7:30 a.m. September 17, 2004 and conducted grid
searches of the island. Two Rapid Needs
Assessment (RNA) teams flew missions on September
16 and conducted assessments
again on September 17, 2004. The U.S. Department
of Health and Human Services (HHS) is providing
60 medical personnel to support medical
operations at Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola
(Escambia County). 

Verbal mission assignments have been received for
a Deployable Tactical Operations System (DTOS),
Ice, Water, Power, Regional Activation, and
Technical Assistance to the State and  Logistics.
United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) was
tasked with purchasing and delivering 100
truckloads of water to the Forest Park Warehouse
in Atlanta, and 50 truckloads of ice to Florida.
USACE has been tasked with providing power to the
Duke Field staging area in
Okaloosa County.
