Calgary's E.coli cases increase Last Updated Sat, 25 Sep 2004 20:27:49 EDT CALGARY - The city's E.coli outbreak has affected more than 40 people and Calgary's health officials expect more people to catch the infection. Officials fear that the situation may be more serious than initially believed. On Friday officials said there was no need to shut down suspect restaurants, but on Saturday a few of the city's restaurants were closed to customers. As of Saturday provincial and federal health officials still had not isolated the root cause of the outbreak, but they had confirmed that 16 of those who fell ill ate meat derived from the same source. When the first E.coli cases were reported earlier in the week, the suspect cause was hamburger meat consumed at a handful of local restaurants, but inspectors have turned their attention to a number of packaging plants in southern Alberta. Throughout this ordeal government and health officials have refused to publicly name the restaurants or suppliers being investigated, a move criticized by some of the high school students who fell ill. Meat being processed. Five students required hospitalization as a result of the E.coli infection. On Friday, Health Canada was brought in to help with the investigation which includes restaurants, their suppliers and slaughterhouses. E. coli has an incubation period of two to 10 days and the symptoms don't always show up immediately, said Dr. Linda Panaro, an epidemiologist with Health Canada.
