Luther and Justification #049 - October 24, 2004
If you are like other folks, you are getting
ready for Halloween. You may have your windows
decorated. You no doubt have a supply of candy
to give to neighborhood children. But October
31st should be remembered for a far more
important reason. On that day, almost five
hundred years ago, in the year 1517, Martin
Luther invited debate on ninety-five different
statements. He nailed them to a church door in
Wittenberg, Germany. Because of the debate, what
we know as the Protestant Reformation was born.
Martin Luther was a deeply religious man. He was
concerned about the salvation of his soul. He
became a monk. With all his might, Luther tried
to earn his salvation by his good works. He was
as people today, who are always ready to lend a
helping hand. Then they say, "Well, if I don't
get to heaven, it won't be because I didn't try."
Then Martin Luther found from experience that
"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God" (Romans 3:23). He did not know how to escape
the heavy burden of guilt he felt. Then he began
to read the book of Romans in the Bible.
Romans 1:17 gave Luther his answer. "The just
shall live by faith." Luther had tried to earn
his salvation by his good works. Now he realized
that people are not saved by their works. People
are saved, according to the Bible, through faith
in Jesus Christ.
