Our out-of-tree driver on Sourceforge, version 3.4.2.4 is the latest release of e1000e and "should" compile just fine on your old OS, but we stopped testing of 12.04 back in 2016, when 16.04 came out. That would be my suggestion is to try our latest driver, since that will have all the hardware support and fixes needed to support the i219 devices.
