Hi Folks,

I have been
beating my head with this problem with almost a week without any results.. I
hope someone here might be able to help and would be deeply appreciated..

The problem
in one line is, that when I say ifconfig eth0 down, on kernel 2.4.28, the cisco
switch to which it is connected to, still detects it, as up, with the link led
also lit up. Now there is some HA stuff at the client's place, which is
dependent on the router detecting, that the interface is down.
Now I took a windows laptop, connected to the switch, and disabled it. The
behavior is the same as that of Linux.. interface is still shown, as connected
on the switch.

However if on the cisco switch I say, "shutdown" (command to turn off a port),
then everything is shut down properly, and the led on the interface is turned
off as well...
I have been debugging the kernel (specially e1000 driver) for sometime without
any results.

So is this the way it should be? Is there something (like a kernel patch
against 2.4.28) that I could try, which can bring down the interface
completely. If I am at the wrong place, then please point me to the right
direction.

Thanks a lot in advance..
Deep
