Hi,

I have a question wrt to 802.3 Test Mode and the e1000/e1000e
hardware, which is sometimes required for certification purposes of
networking equipment in some countries.

After reading parts of clause 40.6.1.1.2 of the 802.3 spec and checking
both the e1000e driver and its documentation it seems that:

* 802.3 clause 40.6.1.1.2 is a sort of interoperability test, with
tests required for ransmitter waveform, transmitter distortion and
  transmitted jitter.

* the e1000 documentation mentions support for this in the GCON (09d;
R/W) register. However, I don't see support for this in the e1000e
  driver (v0.5.18.3).

* ethtools 'offline' and 'online' selftests are completely different,
(basically doing e1000_link_test() as well as e1000_reg_test()),
which seem not to be related to clause 40.6.1.1.2.

Are these statements correct? If so, what is your opinion if something
like this should ever go into the driver, possibly with support from
'ethtool' e. g.

I'm currently in the process of checking other drivers as well.

Please share your thoughts.

 /holger
