You didn't say which device supported by e1000e you have.  Please provide the 
output of lspci and any pertinent messages that may be in your system log.  The 
output of 'ethtool -S ethX' both before increasing your mtu and after 
increasing the mtu and it stops working might also help (where ethX is your 
interface name).
