Yes, it did log an error to dmesg, etc..but that is a painful way report
status to a normal user.  Maybe it's time to add another option to
ethtool...

I don't see anything obvious.  I'll try a bunch of reboots tomorrow
to see if I can reproduce the problem and then see what lspci -vvv
shows.
