The rx_dropped counter reports packets that are dropped by the network
stack.
In your case I assume you are turning on promiscuous mode but must not
be enabling a raw socket that is accepting all incoming frames. As such
some of the frames received aren't for your local system or any systems
you might be routing/bridging to so they are dropped and reported via
rx_dropped.
A simple way to verify this is the case is to leave tcpdump running on
the interface in the background. You should see no rx_dropped errors
reported with it running since it would consume a copy of all incoming
frames.
Thank you for your replay. Even with tcpdump running, rx_dropped errors
stilled occurred. I traced the problem down to gro. Once I disabled gro,
the errors stopped.
