In addition to what Curtis suggested, I would also recommend:

1) use the Git Staging view when creating your commits
2) Show the repo you're working on in the history view from the Git
Repository explorer view (as opposed to choosing a workspace project to
show in the history view).

I usually create patches by right-clicking on the commit in the history
view.
