Further to this.  When I opened another file and did the same thing it worked fine.  Seems sporatic.

I have the "use tab character" set, but the code doesn't seem to contain tabs.  Any new tab I add seems to be converted to spaces regardless.  When I select a block of code and use the "tools/layout" option the leading spaces on every line get removed - not exactly a nice layout.
