What is your max heap set too, and what is the "typical" size of the heap following a 
forced 
garbage collection?  If you find they vary widely (like you have 256 meg max heap, but 
typical 
heap sizes run 60-90 meg), perhaps you might consider reducing your max heap.  

When you specify a large heap, java will dutifully fill it up, and then invoke a 
massive garbage 
collection event at the end.  This results in sweeping through 256 meg of memory at 
once 
(just to get to the 60 meg that is actually used).  It is both wasteful, and if the 
memory is on 
disk, very expensive.

You might also want to play around with the size of the "young" generation and "eden".
