I think I know what is going on with file synchronization. There are two problems
that I can
see. The first is that when programs write large temporary objects into the same
directory
structure that Is in the sourcepath (or perhaps classpath), IDEA tries to
"synchronize" these
large, new files.

The second has to do with the transparent clearcase plug-in that I use. Apparently
any new
file created in the IDEA "domain" is run through the transparent plug-in
synchronously. The
transparent plug-in tries to figure out whether or not the new file is a clearcase
element (a
process that takes some time), and hangs the GUI while we wait for it to finish.

I think the process of checking the CM state of new files should be asynchronous.
Secondly
I think IDEA does something when new files are discovered (build VCS cache? ) that
takes a
long time, and is performed synchronously with GUI operations (read, on the AWT
Thread).

Those of you suffering the problems with file sycnronization, find out if some
operation you
are performing has changed large numbers of files in your source path or classpath.
