1)  click on the Edit Variables box half way down the edit template window
2) set the resulting dialog as follows:

|   Name   |          Expression       |    Default value       | Skip if defined|
|EXPR      |variableOfType("")         |"expr"                  |                |
|EXPR_COPY |EXPR                       |                        |     check      |

Should  work now.
