Nothing I could was able to get idea to work correctly again.

- I changed to different version fo the jkd in different directories. 
Same behavior: classes not brought into the project.

- I created a brand new project. Still no jdk classes in the project.


So, what I did was blow away idea and reinstall. That did it. Maybe some 
of the caching idea does in the install directory was the problem?

What is the purpose of copying the *.jar files anyway? Often I have to 
delete that directory to get new versions of jars [just updated from 
CVS] to be recoginized by idea.
