The point I was making was that an inadvertant key stroke is generally not noticed. Thus, whether auto-save or manual save, you are more likely than not in the accidental case to get into trouble.
The case that has the most valid argument for supporting a file based save is one where I'm doing some quick prototyping / editing that I expect to throw away. (for example, maybe I want to check out the javadoc for a function, and its easier to type it into the editor and mouse over, than it is to bring up a web browser and find the function I'm looking for. I think that case should be solved with an ability to mark and restore to a specific label using LVCS. Further, performance problems with LVCS should be addressed. I'm not trying to wear you down (even if that is the end effect :-). I'm trying to solve the underlying problems you describe in terms of the current philosophy of operation that IDEA has. I opened a feature request: http://www.intellij.net/tracker/idea/viewSCR?publicId=4412&browserPos=0 This describes what I think would be a useful add to IDEA (perhaps its already there..I don't really know) that might address some of the "save file" arguments.
