Idea already has ANT integration (and perhaps more improvements to come
on this). In addition I would like to see some form of log4j
(http://jakarta.apache.org/log4j) integration as well.

I am particularly talking about the output side of things. I guess it
would be nice to be able to manipulate the generated log entries in the
same way as products like logfactor5
(http://www.servidium.com/site/logfactor5/index.html) and the even
better (in some ways) Chainsaw (http://www.puppycrawl.com/chainsaw)

If idea could be used as a tool to view and manipulate log entries no
matter the source (log file, system.out, socket appenders etc) this
would be ... extremely helpful and productive for us.

Features would include the ability to view the category hierarchy,
filter log entries by type (debug, error etc), search for entries,
filter by text within the entry (maybe on a field level description,
time, thread etc), filter by thread, Export sections of log file

and so on.

Could this, or something like it, be added in a not too distant version ?
