Yes, we'd need a small "launcher" .exe that could take the file handed to it
by windows, launch IDEA, and hand it the file. This launcher could be
associated in windows to any file extensions you'd like (.java, .jsp, etc).
(This shouldn't scare anyone off; IDEA already has native filewatcher
code...)

However, as was discussed earlier (couple of months back?) this poses a
problem since IDEA doesn't take .java files (or anything else for that
matter) as command line args. (If I recall correctly I think it only takes
a .ipr project file.)

In addition, there is the problem of which project file to open to properly
handle the .java file you opened. How would IDEA be able to do any of its
magic if it had no context? No classpath to find your imports, jars, etc.?
I could see this working for text files, xml/html files, but not code that
needs a classpath setup to create an intelligent environment.

At least not without some thought, that is. And I throw all of my available
points at this -- it would be GREAT.

Do you know of any way to do this? AFAIK, Windows simply does not allow you
to associate files with anything except a Windows application - and IDEA is
a Java application. That means that Windows will not support *any* kind of
association to it.

The only OS that I know of which supports associations to Java apps is
MacOS X.

And it does no good to complain to Microsoft - they are trying to kill Java
off.
