Maybe a better solution will be so that the refactoring-items (in the menus), which are not related (and can not be applied) to the selected code or to where the caret is blinking, get disabled.

A very frustrating thing when trying to do refactoring is the total failure
of any response if the wrong set of code is selected. It would really be
nice if in such a case, IDEA could help select increasing amounts of valid
code, displayed in a dialog (along with a description of the precondition).
