+1. It might be a little awkward though given IDEA's 
"automatic" file saving mechanism. The changed lines
would be reset every time you compile, deactivate the
IDEA frame, and so on (I some of these are configurable).
It would be most useful in concert with the traditional
file saving mechanism, which I realise I harder to do
because when compiling for example, IDEA'll have to
save the current files to a temp directory and compile
there. I know the file saving has been discussed several
times and I've gotten quite used to it.

That reminds me, didn't IntelliJ mention quite a while
back that they had planned to implement a file-based
mini version control system like JBuilder does? This
way, whenever a file is auto-saved by IDEA, an on disk
backup is created. There could be an option to remove
all these backup files upon check-in. This way, the
"highlight changed lines" could compare the the in
memory version to either the first backup file or the
last backup file (depending on a setting).

Just daydreamin' here. I think I would like it...
