How can it save space? You still have to have the error markings somewhere. As I can 
see the error markings have to reside on the extra vertical bar. This works perfect 
for me. A petty tip if you need to save space might be to increase the monitor 
resolution and/or use a smaller size of your editing font. 
(I still like to see a tiny parse status indication of the files (if any available) in 
the tab along with the filename.)
