I like to have a pain open at the left and a pain open at the right. I
really shorten the width of both so that I can still leave enough space for
source code in the middle. I will even adjust the horizontal slider over so
that I can see the 2nd level folders/icons since that's where the important
info is. It would be nice if IDEA could try to use at least one column
(possibly two) LESS than what it uses now. I could attempt to describe some
ideas, like ones that use an extra horizontal line for every entry to avoid
using a vertical column... but it's difficult to describe in text, and I'm
sure NetBrains could could come up with something that works fine. The
challenging part for NetBrains would be having to implement their own tree
widgett since Swing's is likely not flexible enough.

Oh, one other idea... when expanding a folder element, I would like IDEA to
automatically expand it's single child if there is only a single child.
That would be most useful for browsing package structures.
