When editing java files in IntelliJ IDEA I often move in and between source
files by chasing links in javadoc, by ctrl clicking on types, or by
selecting from the structure and project panes. These movements represent
a history of locations from where I currently am stretching back to the
first file I edited.

I'd like to see a universal back button that returns to previous editing
locations. This would work similar to the back button in a web browser by
returning to the file and location that I was before. Maybe it could
include a popup menu of recent positions similar to the back button in IE.

(I suppose that manual movements of the scroll bar or using the arrow keys
could be difficult to integrate into this. I think it would be annoying to
have "scrolled to line 74" as part of the history. I would suggest simply
ignoring changes of positions made by scrolling or by using arrow keys. It
might be possible to group sets of scroll actions into "logical lumps" that
make sense but this seems like more trouble than it would be worth.)

An obvious addition would be a forward button.

Thanks for making a great product,
