Working with build 644, this is exactly how IDEA currently operates (unless
I've been hallucinating the last couple of days, which is quite possible
considering some of the hours I've been putting in). I'm thinking the
JetBrains guys were so annoyed by having to use the arrows keys constantly
that they gave the issue DEFCON5 priority.

My suggestion was really an extension of the concept whereby IDEA would
further complete the structure of the statement and position the caret for
efficient typing. Part of the problem with how IDEA currently works, even
with this "smart" overtype mode, is that you end up having to use the arrow
keys where you once would have been able to keep your fingers on the QWERTY
portion of the keyboard.

I realize I'm being worthlessly nitpicky as I look out the windows of my
office building at the construction workers tearing down the dilapitaded
building next door, but when you type 14 hours a day, constantly having to
switch hand positions can lead to a lot of wrist pain. While I am aware of
certain hops and barley based remedies for such pain, they have terrible
side effects related to abdominal girth and the consequent psychological
issue known as being a single geek.

All kidding aside, I'll go post a comment expanding on the basic idea that
has already been--mostly--implemented.
