That's the syntax analysis running in the background, isn't it? At least that's what I always thought, although it usually jumps 3 MB at a time on my machine. Maybe you had a number of editors open when IDEA started, and they all had to go through their files? And when you used less memory, maybe you had opened the project with fewer editors open?
