That's the way it works...closing a tab is not equivalent to 'closing a window' in the Windows/MDI paradigm. When you switch to another app from IDEA, all changes are saved to disk...so if you edit a file and then switch to another app (e.g. a command window to run an Ant task manually), all the changes you have made will have been saved to disk. Note that this does not affect the 'undo' functionality, which works across file save operations.
