we have something similar as well.. except we make JARed releases of the common stuff and put it in the lib of the subprojects... that way if subproject1 is in maintenance mode we can just leave the old version of the common stuff in there and not have to refactor until we are ready, but sub2 can have all the new wizzy features of the current common stuff...
