If there was a key map for changing the keymaps, you could do it that way.  WHen 
you are in insert mode, we use the "standard idea" keymap.  When we hit the 
escape key, it goes to the "command mode" keymap.  When we hit the "i" key, we 
go back to the standard idea keymap.

I'm not sure if we can take over the escape key though.
