One of the nice things that vi(m) does is when you perform a search, all of
the matches are pre-highlighted.

In IDEA, this might work nicely with CTRL-F3 (or even a regular search for
that matter). But with CTRL-F3, you would first highlight the text you want
to search for, then press CTRL-F3, at which time all of the matching text in
the file gets highlighted with, say, a light blue color. It might even be
nice to put blue lines in the right margin highlighting all of the match
points.

The cursor would then be placed on the first match which would be
highlighted with the darker blue 'select' color. Each time you hit F3 (or
CTRL-F3), you would jump to the next match, like you do now, and it changes
from light blue to dark blue. The difference is that you can see ahead of
time where all the matches will be.

And sometimes you just want to get some idea of where and how frequently a
variable is used. So by hitting CTRL-F3, you get all of the little blue
lines on the side and that may tell you everything you need to know.
